I could see and smell smoke and hear sirens occasionally. Thankfully, the wind died down and they were able to get them under control. The largest fires are south of Austin in Bastrop. Note sure where they stand. Maybe 35% contained and so far maybe 1400 homes lost? It sucks having an extreme drought.Luciano Chavezhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03048048238120527466noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15693777.post-28334688825732114162011-09-08T23:47:08.803-07:002011-09-08T23:47:08.803-07:00Hey Luciano. You wouldn't have recognized Barry based on the pictures from his book as they looked like porno stars from the early eighties. Maybe he will take the hint and put out a new edition of his fantastic book on carp fly fishing. As for rod tip up or down I have read suggestions for both techniques. I have always fished with the tip close to the water for fresh or salt water except when I was high sticking with a nymph rig. Hope you are far away from the brush fires down there in Texas.Mike Ghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09964516642128941176noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15693777.post-24854293559576401002011-09-08T10:49:47.188-07:002011-09-08T10:49:47.188-07:00I apologize for coming off like I have that much e...I apologize for coming off like I have that much experience in the area. I have some but certainly not as much as Mr. Reynolds (who I have heard of). I guess, in hindsight it is possible Mr. Reynolds might have been nymphing or drifting the fly like trout fisherman do as the technique appropriate for the given scenario.

Additionally, I stand corrected as to strip striking for a carp (for bass that is correct). According to Jim Gray, our local Austin area carp fly fishing expert, you should raise the tip of the rod and not strip strike.

The link below has a great summary of tips that Jim has presented to some of the local fly fishing clubs related to carp fishing. A lot of the things he says I can attest to from my own experience but Jim is really the guy with the most knowledge around here.

Search for "Fly Fishing for Carp in the Texas Hill Country" within that page.

http://www.sgflyfishers.com/Meetings.htmlLuciano Chavezhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03048048238120527466noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15693777.post-46598661128093836352011-09-07T10:52:31.573-07:002011-09-07T10:52:31.573-07:00Epic post dude. Which is funny because he wrote the book on fly fishing for carp. (If you type the book on fly fishing for carp into google his comes up)

Since he is a super nice guy he probably wouldn't say "up yours smartass", but would take the time to explain why what he was doing was in the best interest of catching the particular fish he was looking at (which he did).

I do know that when you can see the fish and watch the eat you don't have to worry about feeling the take.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09245535671955409800noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15693777.post-8690294200542353962011-09-06T07:14:18.093-07:002011-09-06T07:14:18.093-07:00I forgot, there is one guy in the photos that alwa...I forgot, there is one guy in the photos that always has his rod up. While I am sure he's gonna say, "Up yours smartass" at my suggestion, you'll feel the take from the carp much easier if you put the tip of the rod to the water and remove all the slack. You'll also be able to strip strike quicker when you feel the tension. I take it this guy only fishes for trout and not bass or carp?Luciano Chavezhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03048048238120527466noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15693777.post-1455123133744391952011-09-05T08:54:12.969-07:002011-09-05T08:54:12.969-07:00Chasing carp on the fly is a respectable sport.
