Mosquitoes.... natures douchebag

If you've never been to Arizona you would just think its  too dry to have any sort of mosquito problem.  Don't kid yourself, those dick-nosed dracula bugs can flourish anywhere.  In the white trash neighbor's tire collection,  in the over watered neighbor's lawn,  possibly in the spot my dogs urinate on to mark their territory, anywhere it's damp basically. So what do you do about it?  If you're anything like me chemicals piss you off and you hate the smell of raid and that crap gets you sicker than the bugs.  Thinking about a citronella candle?  Don't, bears love the smell and taste.  I won't even start on deet.  I remember years ago I worked at Wal-Mart in the sporting goods department and a bottle of OFF spilled on the shelf and ate the powder coating "off" of the shelf, clean down to bare metal.  You're suppose to put that on your skin, screw you chemical company. I can't remember how he stumbled upon the information I'm about to share with you but recently my dad found out if you put Listerine in a spray bottle and spray it in a problem area or on yourself it completely drives them away for a whole day.  It not only repels those blood sucking bastards but you will smell nice and fresh and as we all know that's not common for fly fishermen in the field.

  1. I had lunch years ago with a fly casting instructor that went fishing in Florida near the Everglades where the mosquitoes there are known to fly off with little dogs and kids. He said that the general store / bait shop / guide office had a couple of barrels outside full of the deet stuff so you could dip yourself before you headed out into the swamp. That was hardcore. It was probably made up but it sounded cool.

I've been out on the water in Corpus at night when the wind is light and they get bad. You have to shower yourself all over and the little buggers will still try to go in your ear, eyes and nose where you don't spray yourself. Down in South Texas, there are still reports of Dengue Fever attributed to mosquito bites so it is best to put on the Deet cause Dengue is bad stuff.

  2. definitely no need for chemicals the Listerine works 100%. Although being that it works so well against bugs it really makes me second guess putting it in my mouth.

  4. I knew DEET was evil, but I didn't know it could be used as paint stripper. I always cringe when i see people spraying it all over their kids. Any particular flavor of Listerine or just the classic?

  5. Generic stuff works too, I'd rather have the bug bites than have whatever deet gives you. I have to say, it's been a great rain season in my state and the mosquitoes show it but I have minimal bites because of mouthwash in a Windex bottle.

  6. Also If you fish Lures, painted eyed flies, or wear nail polish and as we found out two days ago on the boat with Kyle's girlfreind, OFF will eat those too. The only reason I can figure a company would want me to put that crap on my skin is if they also own a company that does cancer research.
